Learn how to play the Rolling Realms Promo: The Isle of Cats. This guide explains setup, scoring, and strategy for this cat-themed realm.

Quick Answer

To play the Isle of Cats promo in Rolling Realms, you draft cats from a shared pool and score points by filling your boat with matching cat families, but you must also manage limited space and avoid leaving cats stranded.

Understanding the Isle of Cats Realm

The Isle of Cats promo pack adds a cat-themed realm to Rolling Realms. Unlike other realms that focus on resource conversion or tile placement, this one is about drafting and set collection. You draw cat tokens from a central pool, each showing a color and pattern, and place them into your boat grid. The goal is to complete families (groups of matching cats) to score points, but each cat you place uses a space, and you cannot move cats once placed. This creates a tension between grabbing a cat you want and leaving room for future draws.

Key Differences from Other Realms

The Isle of Cats realm is unique because it uses a shared drafting pool instead of individual dice rolls. This means you need to watch what other players take, as a cat you need might disappear. Also, the scoring is based on set completion, not on positional bonuses. If you leave a cat unmatched, it scores zero points, so planning your boat layout is critical. The promo pack includes 6 cards, one for each of the six realms in the core game, so you can play the Isle of Cats realm in any game that uses those realms.

How to Play the Isle of Cats Realm

  1. Set Up the Cat Pool: Shuffle the cat tokens (provided in the promo pack) and place them face down in a central pool. Each player takes a boat board (included in the core game) and a pen. The number of tokens used depends on player count: 20 tokens for 2 players, 30 for 3, 40 for 4. Using too few tokens can make the game end too quickly; adjust based on your group's preference.
  2. Draft Cats on Your Turn: On your turn, draw one cat token from the pool and place it in any empty space on your boat board. You may also choose to pass, but passing means you take no cat that round. Cats come in different colors and patterns; matching cats of the same color and pattern form a family. Passing can be strategic if you want to force other players to take cats you don't need, but it also means you lose a turn.
  3. Score Completed Families: At the end of the game (when the pool is empty), score points for each completed family of 2 or more matching cats. A family of 2 cats scores 3 points, 3 cats scores 6, 4 cats scores 10, and so on. Cats that do not belong to a completed family score 0 points. Leaving a single cat unpaired is a common mistake; try to fill your boat with pairs or larger groups.
  4. End the Game and Tally Scores: The game ends when all cat tokens have been drawn. Each player adds up their family scores. The player with the highest score wins. If there is a tie, the player with the fewest unpaired cats wins. Keep track of your unpaired cats during the game to avoid surprises at scoring.
