Welcome, travelers, to the Japanese island of Shikoku! In Tokaido Duo, 1-2 players discover the smallest of Japan’s four main islands through a three-faceted spiritual journey.

As the pilgrim, visit shrines, gardens, seashores, and hot springs. As the merchant, collect and sell traditional souvenirs. As the artist, paint a variety of beautiful vistas, and gift your paintings to locals. Gain points through each character’s discoveries as you race to complete one of their jobs, and live each journey to the fullest. If you do, your trek will grow into a life-changing experience!

The Stonemaier Games version of Tokaido Duo features character guides for each player and an Automa solo mode.

I played it solo twice already and the three-faceted spiritual journey really clicks once you get the rhythm down. The 1-2 player setup is perfect for when my usual game partner isn't around.

The three-faceted scoring paths keep every turn feeling meaningful, even when we're just placing a few tiles. I love how the pilgrimage theme actually comes through in the mechanics rather than just being pretty art on the box.

It plays so smoothly even with just one player, and the three-way choice between pilgrim paths, hot springs, and scenic views keeps every turn interesting. The little island board is surprisingly dense with options, and my solo game lasted a cozy 40 minutes without overstaying its welcome. Really ca
