I wasn't expecting a whole stand-alone game inside an expansion box, but my group played the Asian birds on their own for a full evening and nobody missed the base set. The new habitat and nectar mechanics click fast and add just enough tension without slowing the turns down.
The new Asian birds add some really interesting powers, and the two-player duel mode has become our go-to for weeknights. It works great mixed into the base game too, so you're not forced to play it separately.
Played this as a standalone two-player game with my partner and it works surprisingly well, no base set required. The new Asian species cards have some really striking artwork, and the two-player duet mode adds a nice bit of tension we weren't expecting.
